Muzaffarpur city in Bihar is experiencing a sharp surge in the stray dog menace, which has triggered serious public safety concerns. According to media reports, hospitals are witnessing a sharp rise in dog bite cases as winter intensifies. Speaking to the media, medical staff at the Model Hospital said that the daily number of dog bite patients has doubled in recent weeks.
Hospital cases more than double
According to hospital personnel, around 30 to 40 patients were coming to the Model Hospital daily, which has now risen to nearly 70 to 80 patients every day. On 16th December, a woman named Babita was rushed to the hospital after a stray dog bit her outside her house. She was administered first aid and given the anti rabies vaccine. Babita, just like other dog bite victims, must get five shots of the vaccine in the coming weeks as per the schedule.
Another dog bite victim, Raja Rai, said that in recent times the population of stray dogs has increased exponentially in the city. Despite complaints, there is no effective system in place to deal with the threat. Several localities have witnessed a surge in packs of dogs attacking two-wheeler riders. Children playing outside have become easy prey to stray dogs.
Residents have stressed the need for effective control of the stray dog population in the city. The surge in cases has been reported at a time when the Supreme Court of India is hearing a suo motu case on the stray dog menace in the country.
Why dogs turn aggressive in winter
According to Dr Narendra Tiwari, who is serving as a veterinary officer at the government animal hospital in Chandwara, dogs tend to become more aggressive during winter. He said that hormonal levels rise during this season, due to which dogs turn aggressive.
