Between 21st December and 23rd December, at least 20 people were injured in rabid stray dog attacks in the Donje, Gorhe, Khanapur and Manerwadi areas near the Sinhagad foothills in Pune district of Maharashtra. At least 11 victims reportedly sustained serious injuries and are undergoing treatment at Pune’s Sassoon General Hospital.
According to media reports, the attacks began on 21st and intensified on 22nd and 23rd. The dogs attacked schoolchildren, pedestrians, elderly residents, women and even gram panchayat staff without provocation. The victims sustained injuries on hands, legs, necks and the abdomen. Several victims sustained multiple bite injuries, raising concerns of rabies exposure.
Residents allege administrative inaction
Speaking to the media, residents of the densely populated Sinhagad Road and Donje belt said the fear of stray dog attacks has become a daily reality. Packs of stray dogs attack children playing outside homes, school students and pedestrians. Locals said that 8-10 serious bite cases are being reported daily in the Sinhagad area.
Primary anti-rabies vaccination has been administered at local health centres, while those with severe injuries have been referred to Sassoon Hospital. Angry residents have accused the local administration of remaining inactive despite the escalating danger posed by stray dogs.
