On 23rd August, the morning brought a terrifying experience for at least 17 people as two aggressive stray dogs went on a biting spree. All the victims of the stray dog attack were rushed to Konch Community Health Centre. Fourteen of the injured had severe injuries and were referred to the medical college for advanced treatment. The authorities and residents were alarmed by the scale and speed of the stray dog attack.

Teams deployed across neighbourhoods

As soon as the authorities came to know about the biting incidents, the municipal administration dispatched teams across multiple neighbourhoods to trace the dogs. The residents were warned to stay vigilant. An emergency control number was issued by Municipal Chairperson Pradeep Gupta. He appealed to the citizens to immediately report any sighting of suspicious or aggressive dogs so that prompt action could be taken. The authorities also increased patrolling and teams were monitoring the affected areas throughout the day.

15 plus injured on Maheshpura Road

The majority of the attacks took place in Girwar Nagar on Maheshpura Road where 15 people were bitten by the aggressive dogs. Victims included 12-year-old Sohail, 24-year-old Tahir, 50-year-old Munni Devi, 35-year-old Ramesh, 73-year-old Daya Shankar and others.

Speaking to the media, Daya Shankar said that the dog attacked without any provocation. People ran for their lives but many were already injured before help arrived. Doctors confirmed that many had deep bite marks and were administered anti-rabies vaccines on priority.

Municipality appeals for public cooperation

Executive Officer Monica Umrao said both dogs involved in the attacks were still being traced, and municipal teams were working continuously to capture them. The incident has sparked fresh concerns about public safety and the growing stray dog menace in smaller towns. Authorities said efforts would continue until the dogs are found and the area is declared safe.

The incident came at a time when the Supreme Court of India has issued a directive to remove dogs from public and private institutions including schools, hospitals, colleges, railway stations and bus stands. While the stray dog menace has become a humanitarian problem, self-styled dog lovers and NGOs are opposing any action against the dogs and attempting to force the apex court to withdraw the directions.
