Delhi: Stray dogs attack 12-year-old schoolgirl in Kirari, family blames MCD inaction

On 19th December, a pack of stray dogs attacked a 12-year-old girl in northwest Delhi’s Kirari area. The incident occurred when the child was returning from school. The injured child has been identified as Kavya Sharma, who studies in Class 4. She lives in Kirari with her family.
The incident brought back memories of the stray dog attack that claimed the life of a child in July this year, which led to a suo motu case on the stray dog menace in the Supreme Court of India. Six-year-old Chhavi had died of rabies almost a month after the attack.
According to her family, Kavya was walking home with three other children when a pack of four to five dogs suddenly attacked her. While the other children managed to escape, Kavya was caught by the dogs.
Speaking to the media, Kavya’s 65-year-old grandfather, Yogesh Sharma, said, “The dogs grabbed my granddaughter and bit her on the thighs. She got scared, fell down, broke a bone in her left arm, and remained surrounded by the dogs for some time.”
He added that the dogs dispersed only after passersby heard the child’s screams and rushed to the spot to rescue her.
Injuries and medical treatment
After being brought home, Kavya was rushed to a nearby hospital, where doctors confirmed that she suffered a fracture in her left arm and multiple bruises on her body. She has been administered the first dose of an anti-rabies injection. According to media reports, her condition is stable.
Family said prior complaints ignored
According to Kavya’s family, the incident occurred due to the inaction of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi despite repeated complaints about stray dogs in the area. Yogesh Sharma said that a formal complaint had been lodged with the MCD nearly two months ago, and a complaint number was also provided. However, no action was taken.
Sharma said, “After the attack, I called the MCD again and told them that my granddaughter was suffering because nothing was done earlier. The official told me they have only one vehicle to catch dogs, and even that vehicle is not working.”
Fear grips neighbourhood
According to the family and local residents, stray dogs have become a serious menace in Kirari, forcing children to remain indoors. Residents have demanded immediate action from civic authorities to control the rising number of stray dogs and ensure the safety of children and elderly people.
Repeated attacks reported in the area
Locals also pointed out that this is not an isolated incident. Over the past six months, several dog attack cases have been reported from nearby areas. In November, a six-year-old child was attacked by a pit bull in Prem Nagar, resulting in the loss of the child’s ear. In June, a six-year-old girl bitten by a dog in Pooth Kalan later died during treatment. In July, a four-year-old child was attacked by a pack of dogs while returning from an anganwadi in Alipur, suffering serious facial injuries.
Residents have urged the authorities to take urgent and effective steps before more such incidents occur.
