On 18 December, a stray dog attacked a 10-year-old girl on platform number three of Dhanbad Railway Station. The incident took place at around 10 pm when the platform was crowded with passengers waiting for trains. The attack raised serious questions over passenger safety at the railway station and triggered panic among travellers.

The incident occurred at a time when the Supreme Court of India has directed local authorities across the country to remove stray dogs from public places and institutions, including railway stations.

The injured child has been identified as Ritika. She had arrived in Dhanbad from Tori with her family and was waiting to board a train to Jhajha. During that time, a stray dog lunged at her without any provocation. The child was left with multiple injuries on different parts of her body.

Chaos and emergency response

Ritika’s screams alerted family members and nearby passengers, who rushed to rescue her. They managed to chase the dog away, but by then the dog had bitten her multiple times. The sudden attack caused chaos on the platform.

Railway staff assisted the family and immediately shifted the injured girl to the railway hospital for treatment. Doctors later stated that her condition is stable, though the family remains deeply shaken by the incident.

Safety concerns at a busy junction

Passengers and local residents have expressed anger over the presence of stray dogs at one of the state’s busiest railway stations. They called the incident a glaring failure of railway safety arrangements and demanded urgent action.
