Between 23rd December and 25th December, Udgir taluka town in Maharashtra reported over 20 cases of dog bites, leading to panic and fear among residents. According to media reports, city engineer Komal Kendre said around 22 people were bitten by stray dogs during that period, including a couple of children.
Kendre clarified that none of the incidents involved rabid dogs. However, the incidents have raised serious safety concerns among residents, particularly parents of young children.
As a precautionary measure, all victims were administered anti rabies vaccines along with rabies antiserum. Kendre acknowledged a sudden spike in cases and said the situation was being closely monitored.
Increased dog van trips and intensified ABC drive
According to civic officials, there are 600 stray dogs in the taluka. The municipal council has increased dog van trips in vulnerable localities to capture stray dogs. Captured animals are being housed at a dedicated shelter home. Kendre added that the Animal Birth Control programme has been intensified to curb the growing stray dog population.
Residents demand effective action, not paperwork
Speaking to the media, local residents urged the municipal council to act decisively. They stressed that the ABC programme must be implemented effectively rather than remaining a formality, underlining the gaps in policy implementation in the region. Locals said that if the authorities continue to ignore the increasing stray dog menace, it may prove fatal in the future.
Awareness drives underway
Authorities have also initiated public awareness programmes in schools, colleges, and other institutions to educate citizens on precautionary measures and reporting protocols as the town grapples with the ongoing stray dog crisis.
