On 1st February, a 29-year-old man from Vasai-Virar in Maharashtra was bitten by a stray dog late at night while out for his routine walk. The victim, Dakshant Sharma, has shared details of the incident with StrayDogMenace.com (SDM).
Attack from behind during routine walk
According to Dakshant Sharma, the incident took place on 1st February 2026, around 11.30 pm, shortly after he had finished dinner and stepped out for his usual walk. Within three to four minutes of leaving his house, a stray dog suddenly attacked him from behind and bit his right leg just below the knee.

“I was completely unaware that a dog was behind me until the moment it bit me,” Sharma said. The dog reportedly held the bite for a few seconds before releasing and running away. At the time of the incident, there were no other people present on the street.
Immediate rush to government hospital
Following the attack, Sharma ran back home and rushed to a government hospital along with his mother. Doctors were available immediately upon arrival.
Hospital records shared by Sharma show that he was administered anti-rabies injections near the wound, along with other treatment required for the dog bite. After treatment, Sharma was advised to return home and wash the wound daily.
Scheduled rabies vaccine doses
Doctors informed Sharma that he would need to return for three additional doses of the Rabipur rabies vaccine on scheduled dates. During his third visit on 8th February, Sharma noticed that two other patients were also present for treatment after stray dog bites, one a middle-aged man and the other a young man aged around 25 to 30 years.
This, he said, raised concerns about the frequency of stray dog attacks in the area.
The incident once again brings attention to the persistent stray dog menace in urban and semi-urban localities across the country, where residents continue to face attacks during routine daily activities, often late at night.
