On 17th December, a woman and a man walking near the Pratap Nagar shopping centre were suddenly chased and attacked by a pack of stray dogs in Jodhpur, Rajasthan. The entire episode was captured on CCTV and the footage has since gone viral on social media. The incident has triggered fear among residents.

Speaking to the media, eyewitnesses said that the dogs turned particularly aggressive towards the woman. She ran to save herself and managed to reach a safer spot after a brief chase. The man also narrowly escaped the attack. Though there were no serious injuries, the incident caused panic in the area.

Residents flag repeat incidents, civic apathy

According to locals, this was not an isolated case. Several such incidents of stray dog attacks have occurred in the past in the Pratap Nagar area, where children, elderly residents and pedestrians were the prime targets. They said that foreign tourists visiting the city have also faced similar incidents in the past. Notably, the Supreme Court of India also flagged in its 7th November order that India’s image is getting ruined on international platforms because of stray dog attacks.

Locals have accused the municipal corporation of ignoring incidents of stray dog attacks in the city. They said that while authorities claim they are running sterilisation drives, catching operations and monitoring stray dogs, all of these remain limited to paperwork with little visible impact on the ground.

Fear replaces routine movement

In several neighbourhoods of Jodhpur, morning and evening walks have become risky. Residents said that with frequent stray dog attacks, there is a need for immediate and effective action to control the rising population and ensure the safety of residents, children and tourists.
