Tamil Nadu: Stray dogs maul four goats to death in Erode village and take away 10 chickens

On 19th December, four goats were mauled to death by stray dogs in Villarasampatti near Erode in Tamil Nadu. The incident has triggered distress among local farmers who depend heavily on livestock for their livelihood. It has once again highlighted the growing menace posed by roaming stray dogs in rural and semi urban pockets of the district.

Night attack inside farm shed

The incident took place in the Green Garden area of Villarasampatti. Palanisamy, a local farmer, had been rearing goats and country chickens on his farmland. As part of his routine, he secured the animals inside a shed on Friday night before leaving for home. During the night, a group of stray dogs broke into the shed and attacked the livestock. Four goats were killed on the spot. Furthermore, at least ten country chickens were also carried away by the dogs.

The farmer discovered the carnage the next morning and immediately informed the authorities.

Farmers demand action and compensation

Following a complaint, officials from the Animal Husbandry Department and the Corporation visited the site and carried out an inspection. Farmers in Villarasampatti said stray dogs frequently roam the area and have been repeatedly attacking goats and poultry, leading to recurring financial losses.

Locals urged the authorities to take urgent steps to sterilise and remove stray dogs from residential and farming zones. They also demanded compensation for the losses suffered and called for the introduction of an insurance scheme for goats to protect small and marginal farmers from such incidents.
