On 23rd December, a pack of stray dogs attacked at least 35 people within a few hours in Latur district. The incident triggered chaos and anger among residents, leading them to stay inside throughout the day.
According to media reports, the first wave of attacks occurred between 5 pm and 6 pm, when over 25 people were bitten across different localities. Victims included a woman doctor, shopkeepers, school going children, and even toddlers. A second round of attacks followed between 7 pm and 8 pm in the densely populated Chaubara and Killa Galli areas, leaving 10 more people injured.
All the injured were rushed to nearby hospitals for treatment and anti-rabies shots. While their condition is reported to be stable, the sheer scale of the attacks within a short span has caused widespread panic.
Residents say fear has taken over daily life
The repeated incidents have disrupted normal life in the area. Parents are reluctant to send children to school, evening markets have thinned out, and residents say venturing outdoors after dark now feels unsafe.
Calling the situation “out of control”, residents said they had never witnessed such aggressive behaviour by stray dogs in residential streets.
Authorities yet to outline action plan
Locals have demanded the removal of aggressive dog packs, a serious overhaul of the Animal Birth Control programme, and adequate availability of rabies vaccines.
