On 18th December, a pack of stray dogs attacked a 9-year-old boy, leaving him seriously injured. The incident took place when the child was playing inside a residential society in the Vesu area of Surat. The incident has once again raised concerns over the presence of stray dogs inside gated residential societies, not only in Gujarat but across the country.
Attack inside residential society
The incident occurred in the afternoon at Ratna Jyoti Apartment when the child was playing in the society garden. Residents said a pack of stray dogs suddenly surrounded the boy and launched a violent attack. They bit his hand and caused severe injuries. The child screamed, alerting residents and watchmen, who rushed to his rescue. They managed to rescue the child after considerable effort.
Child hospitalised
The injured boy was immediately rushed to a nearby hospital, where he was admitted for treatment. Media reports suggest that his condition is stable. However, residents said the incident has left families in the society shaken, particularly those with young children and elderly members.
Residents question civic inaction
Following the attack, residents expressed strong resentment against the Surat Municipal Corporation. They accused the civic body of continued inaction despite repeated complaints about the presence of stray dogs in the area. Locals said that five to six dogs roam freely in and around the society and that earlier representations failed to evoke any response from the authorities.
They further alleged that children and elderly residents have been attacked on previous occasions as well, raising questions about whether the civic body is waiting for a major tragedy before taking effective action.
One dog caught, demands persist
After the recent incident, a municipal team reportedly caught one stray dog. However, residents are demanding the removal of all stray dogs from the locality, insisting that partial action does little to address the larger safety concern.
