On 19th December, Sasaram in Bihar witnessed another round of panic after a rabid dog went on a biting spree in the Kargahar market area. At least 20 people who had come to the market for routine shopping were reportedly injured in the attack. The incident triggered chaos as the dog chased and attacked anyone who came in its path, forcing residents to flee for safety.
According to media reports, villagers from nearby areas were also visiting the market when the attack happened. The dog suddenly entered the crowded space and began biting people indiscriminately. As panic spread, shopkeepers shut down stalls and people ran in different directions to escape. Attempts by locals to catch or kill the dog failed, as it fled towards neighbouring villages.
Several women and men sustained serious bite injuries. The injured were rushed to the local Community Health Centre, where they were administered anti rabies injections and given immediate medical care. Doctors confirmed that all victims received primary treatment and necessary medication before being discharged.
Speaking to the media, Medical Officer Dr Uttam Kumar said that prompt vaccination was ensured for all those bitten and that wounds were treated without delay. However, fear continues to grip the surrounding villages, as the dog remains untraced.
Following the incident, residents demanded urgent intervention, urging authorities to locate and capture the rabid dog before further attacks occur. The forest department has been informed, but locals say the delay in action has added to their anxiety. The episode has once again raised serious concerns over the lack of preparedness to deal with rabid and stray animals in public spaces.
