On 29th December, a spate of street dog attacks across Ujjain left at least 12 people injured within a span of just four hours. Among the victims was a 4-year-old boy who sustained severe facial injuries. He has been admitted to the government-run Charak Hospital for treatment.
Child suffers serious facial injuries
The most serious incident was reported from Jaithal village on Agar Road, where Priyanshu, aged four, was attacked while watching kites outside his home in the evening. According to local accounts, the child wandered into a nearby lane when a street dog suddenly pounced on him, knocked him to the ground, and mauled his face and eye area. Neighbours rushed to the spot after hearing the child’s screams and managed to rescue him from the animal.
He was immediately taken to Charak Hospital, where doctors found deep injuries to his face and eye. The child was shifted to the operation theatre for emergency treatment, given multiple stitches, and remains under medical observation.
Twelve cases reported in four hours
Dr Kapil Verma, who was on duty in the emergency ward, said Priyanshu’s case was the most critical among a sudden surge in dog bite incidents. “Between 2 pm and 6 pm on Sunday, 12 people injured in street dog attacks were brought to the hospital from different parts of the city. All were given primary treatment and anti-rabies vaccine doses,” he said.
Doctors added that most of the victims included children and adult men.
Rising concern over stray dog menace
The series of attacks has triggered fresh concern among residents over the growing stray dog menace in the city. Locals have demanded immediate intervention by civic authorities, pointing out that Charak Hospital alone reportedly handles thousands of dog bite cases every year, with previous incidents having even resulted in fatalities.
