On 6th January, an elderly man was mauled by a pack of stray dogs in Dwarka Sector 19 in Delhi. The victim has been identified as 60-year-old daily wage worker Raju. He succumbed to his injuries after battling for his life for three days at a hospital and died on Friday.
How the attack unfolded
According to media reports, Raju was walking on the road in the area when a pack of stray dogs suddenly chased him. In a desperate attempt to save himself, he jumped into a nearby park. However, the dogs followed him inside, surrounded him, pulled him to the ground and mauled him brutally. His clothes were torn and he suffered severe injuries before passersby alerted the authorities.
Victim’s identity and background
Police reached the spot and shifted Raju to a hospital, where he underwent treatment for three days before dying. As he was not carrying any identity documents, his identity could not be established initially. During the investigation, police identified him as a daily wage labourer whose family resides in Ambrahi village, Dwarka.
Raju had reportedly been living on roads and footpaths for over a year after leaving his home due to frequent domestic disputes. He is survived by his wife and three children. His wife works as a domestic help in a housing society in Sector 11 to support the family.
After the postmortem examination, the body was handed over to the family, who left early Thursday morning for Sitapur district in Uttar Pradesh for the last rites.
The victim did not die of rabies. Yet the claim of “zero rabies deaths” in Delhi is repeatedly used to mask a harsher reality. Rabies is not the only threat. Even without rabies, brutal injuries from stray dog attacks can be fatal. And when victims survive, they are often left with lifelong trauma, crippling medical costs, physical disability, and deep psychological scars that never truly heal.
