Uttar Pradesh: Stray dog attacks leave over 200 injured in 20 days in Deoria, several referred to Gorakhpur

On 20th December, at least two dozen people were bitten by stray dogs in Deoria district in Uttar Pradesh. In December alone, at least 200 stray dog bite cases were reported in the district. More than half a dozen critically injured victims were referred from Deoria Medical College to Gorakhpur Medical College. Repeated incidents have triggered widespread fear among residents.

Children among injured in Rampur Karkhana area

The highest number of incidents was reported from the Rampur Karkhana Nagar Panchayat area. In the Bauli locality of Thakur Mandir ward, a stray dog bit nearly a dozen people, including two children. The injured include six-year-old Al Bux, eight-year-old Salab Ali, 16-year-old Sharif Alam and 35-year-old Riyaz Ahmad. Locals alleged that the same dog had attacked goats, buffaloes and cows a day earlier.

Later on Friday evening, the dog reached the Dhus locality, where it bit 48-year-old polder operator Anil from Padrauna in Kushinagar district. Five cyclists passing through the Dumri Pandeychak road were also attacked, causing panic. Residents chased the dog away towards Majhratia using sticks.

Multiple villages report fresh cases

All injured persons were taken to Dumri Primary Health Centre on Saturday morning and administered anti rabies injections. In the Madanpur police station area, Bhulaipur village resident Vivek Mishra and his nine-year-old daughter Siddhi were bitten. In Pidri village, 75-year-old Shripal, 60-year-old Bhoja Prasad and his wife Manju Devi were injured, with Bhoja Prasad referred in a serious condition. In the Surauli police station area, 45-year-old Chanda Devi from Saraura Pandey village was also injured.

The residents have demanded immediate administrative intervention to curb the attacks.
